PROCEDURES : Pulse Volume Recordings

More than 50% of individuals with peripheral vascular disease (narrowing of arteries in the extremities) have symptoms. What is even more frightening is that 20% of those with peripheral vascular disease with have a heart attack or stroke within five years and the death rate for this group is high. Early diagnosis of this disease is by an easy non-invasive test called pulse volume recordings. These recordings are measured with the patient lying down and blood pressures are recorded and compared in the arms and legs. In some cases, the patient may be asked to perform simple exercises. These pressures are then compared to determine if there is decreased circulation to any area. This test is generally performed on individuals who have a diagnosis of diabetes, who smoke, or those who experience symptoms of leg pain at rest or when exercising and requires less than an hour of time.
