Types of Heart Defects Explained
While you may tend to think of cardiovascular problems as reserved just for an older generation, some types of heart defects can arise even before birth. Most types of heart defects are diagnosed early on and some are treated surgically or with medication. While some heart defects are very severe and need immediate intervention, that isn’t the only type of defect. Heart defects run the gamut from very minor to extremely problematic.
According to the American Heart Association, nine out of 1,000 babies born in the U.S. have some sort of heart defect. Tragically, some are fatal, but most babies with more minor defects will survive well into adulthood and live very normal, happy lives.
There are 18 different types of congenital heart defects. They range from holes in the heart walls to circulatory mis-wiring to the absence of parts of the heart. There are many medical interventions that can save the lives of children with heart defects. Heart defects may put children at risk for other types of heart problems such as pulmonary hypertension, arrhythmias, and congenital heart disease later in life. However, with a modified lifestyle that limits cardiovascular stress, many people with heart defects live fulfilled and healthy lives.

While the term “congenital” defect means that a child was born with the defect, there are other types of heart defects that can be acquired later in life. Certain diseases, such as rheumatic fever, can cause heart problems, as well.
While it is extremely scary for parents to have a child with a heart defect, there is incredible treatment available, making it possible for children born with congenital heart defects to live long and healthy lives.
