Heart Health Tips
Heart health is the culmination of a number of factors. It seems extremely complicated, and in some ways, it is. It’s a series of intricate systems that pretty much keep your body doing what it needs to day in and day out. But even though there’s a lot involved, there are some seriously simple ways to hack your way to a healthier heart while still living your life. Here are a few of our favorite super easy heart healthy hacks and heart health tips that reduce risk factors of heart disease.
This is maybe the easiest of them all. Get a few more ZzZzZzs. It’s been widely reported that adequate sleep is a key factor to overall health, and that holds true for heart health, too. Let your head hit the pillow a little earlier than normal, take a nap if you find yourself completely run down in the middle of the day, or find a way to maximize your pre-bed routine to allow you a few more minutes of sweet slumber in the mornings. Whatever ways you can, sneak in more sleep and you’ll reap the benefits in many ways, including increased heart health.
This one is a little more complicated, maybe, but if you’ve been on the verge of pulling your hair out lately, it might be time to take a step back, let some things go, and focus on your breathing for a few minutes. One of the fastest ways to lower your stress levels is to take several deep breaths and sit in stillness for as long as you can comfortably. If you’ve never tried meditation, try a guided meditation app or something that makes finding space for those still, quiet moments in your day that much easier. Taking your stress down a notch or two will make a huge difference in your heart’s overall health (and your brain’s overall health, too! – double win!)
Watch Something Funny
Laughter is the best medicine, or so they say. And while it might not replace, you know, modern medicine, it certainly is a key component to leading a heart-healthy life. Go ahead, click on the cat video, watch that baby laugh for an inordinately long time, marvel over the guy falling off a trampoline (as long as he gets back up it’s totally ok to laugh). Bring a little joy into your life, a quality belly laugh isn’t just good for your abs, it’s good for your heart, too.
Pet a Dog
Honestly, this is probably a dream come true for most people. You might be looking at us a little incredulous – can petting a dog really help your heart be healthier? Yes, absolutely it can! Petting your furry friends (cats count, too!) has been scientifically proven to release endorphins, lower stress, and thus help elevate your heart health. Spend a little more time telling your pal what a good boy he is or soaking up the relaxation that only comes from a quality cat purr. And if someone tries to give you a hard time, just tell them you’re doing it for your heart!
