2019 is just around the corner, and with the new year comes the classic resolution list. While we fully support using this time to reflect on the year behind us and look ahead to what we want to accomplish in the new year, we think it’s essential to tackle these things in a specific, beneficial way. It’s not enough to list off things you want and hope for the best. Creating a set of resolutions that help support each other, resolutions that create a sort of rising tide that lifts all boats, means looking at things differently than most. If you’re not sure where to start with goal-setting for 2019, here are some ideas on setting resolutions that create positive change in more ways than one.
Keep Your Health in Mind
This one’s obvious. Surprise, surprise, resolutions about health being encouraged by the cardiologists, right? Health and fitness goals are usually number one on the list this time of year, and we love that! But we encourage you to be smart about this. Keep your health in mind, realistically. If you’ve never even run a mile, don’t decide you’re going to run a marathon in 2019 and expect it to happen. If getting a few sit ups in can be difficult for you, don’t sign up for a Cross-fit gym without any guidance first. We firmly believe that bodies are capable of so, so much, but before you set and decided to go after any health-based resolution, we recommend getting the all-clear from your doctors. It’s essential to work within your body’s current capabilities and build its strength before jumping into big, long-term goals.
We’re not asking you to become an Eastern medicine expert here. No, when we say holistic, we mean big picture: set goals that are connected, that lend themselves to one another, that help you reach new levels of personal and professional success and fulfillment as a whole. Keeping your resolutions related makes a path to achieving them easier.
Think Outside Yourself
It’s easy, so easy, to get caught up in the “me” sphere when setting your resolutions for the year. They’re all about growing as a person, right? So, of course, they’d pertain to you! Sure, but there’s a lot to be gained by setting a few resolutions that have nothing to do with you. Think about your community, your environment, and those issues that make your heart beat faster. These are great things to find new ways to approach, get involved with, and make an impact in when 2019 rolls around.
Be part of something bigger than you. Fulfillment rarely comes from staying in our comfort zone, and it rarely comes from solely self-focused goals. Taking care of yourself is crucial, but getting involved in your community, in causes that matter to you, and in helping your fellow human can change the way you view the world, which can lead to some significant personal breakthroughs all while creating a ripple effect of positivity within your community.
Keep it SMART
And finally, we know, you’ve probably heard it before, but make those resolutions actionable! All the goals in the world do you no good if you can’t get them done. Specific, Measurable, Achievable,
