Karyl VanBenthuysen, M.D.

Interventional Cardiologist

Dr. Karyl VanBenthuysen grew up in Des Moines, Iowa and moved to New York in his teenage years. He attended Yale University, where he was recognized as a Yale National Scholar, and Duke University School of Medicine. Following two years in residency training at Duke, he was awarded a National Research Service Award that brought him to Colorado where he served a three-year Research Fellowship at the University of Colorado’ s Cardiovascular-Pulmonary Lab. Dr. VanBenthuysen’s clinical training resumed at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where he completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiology Fellowship and served for three years on the Faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He has been with South Denver Cardiology since 1987 and currently serves as its President. In addition to his Managing Director position with South Denver Cardiology Associates, he serves as the Medical Staff President at Littleton Adventist Hospital, the Medical Co-Director of Centura Health’s Heart and Vascular System of Care and sits on the National Catholic Health Initiative’s Cardiovascular Service Line Leadership Council. He has been recognized in the “Guide to Top Doctors”, “5280’s Top Docs” and “Best Doctors in America”. Dr. VanBenthuysen is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases with specialty Board Certification in Cardiovascular CT and has authored 19 peer-reviewed scientific articles.

Dr. VanBenthuysen is married and has five children and two grandchildren. He considers his family his main extracurricular activity, but also enjoys fishing, golf, hiking and training his labrador retriever puppy!
